Cancer Journal #24 March 5

More about my appointment with Dr. Gering.  She said that Mayo Clinic, my primary health care provider, "plays with her."  I should say!  She felt my throat, thought the thyroid seemed funny, put in an order at Mayo for an ultrasound and I got a call from Mayo the next day to set up ultrasound appointment.  It put me in mind to sing a little of, "The farmer and the cowboy should be friends."

Dr. Gering encourages an organic food diet.  I have a hard time with the price which is foolish because the price difference is trivial and I can handle it.  Nonetheless...  I tell her that I like polenta which is a fancy term for corn meal mush.  I'm pretty sure it's one of the things the little rabbit says "good night"  to in "Good Night Moon"  Anyway, she mentions glyphosates. I tell her I buy it at Weavers.  That cuts no mustard with her.  Weavers is a country store, run by Amish, with a wide range of unusual grains, along with other products, they buy in bulk and then bag up in smaller portions.  Anyway, as I say, Dr. Gering is not impressed that that's where I get my corn meal.  I suppose. Corn treated with glyphosates is corn treated with glyphosates whether it's bagged by a woman wearing a bonnet or not.

Since seeing Dr. Gering, I have been down to Weavers and was impressed with all the organic grain they have.  Pearled barley, kamut grain, amaranth, millet (all of which I bought).  But alas, their corn meal is not organic.  I bought it anyway.  I dearly love polenta--or corn mush if you prefer.  I'll go easy on it.  I must remember that I'm not to give cancer a fighting chance.  And it's all a process.  I have cooked amaranth.  It has a taste only a mother amaranth could love.  Perhaps if it's mixed with some other stuff.  The texture is interesting.  And I do like the name.

  1. I love you, Dad. I'd like to try some amaranth. :-)

  2. Have you ever had quinoa? I used to make a salad with it... feta cheese, black olives, artichoke hearts, olive oil, balsamic vinegar...

Some food stores here might carry this in the "natural" aisle...
