Cancer Journal #23 March 1
Besides Mayo Clinic, I doctor at Spero Wellness Clinic which bills itself as complimentary, not alternative medicine. It's practice is functional medicine. To quote Dr. Kristie Gering, its director, "The functional medicine philosophy is searching for and attempting to correct the root cause of a problem rather than simply using medication for symptom management. The functional treatment approach utilizes food & lifestyle first, then targets herbs, nutritional supplements and other modalities second and then medications if needed."
Since November, I have been getting Vitamin C infusions, 100 grams per week. It takes about three hours and I have pleasant visits with whomever I share the treatment room with. A young fellow has heart irregularities after contracting the corona virus. Vitamin C is a potentially effective treatment for that. The lady who hates cancer that I wrote a poem about is now cancer free. She has done various things-takes in high concentrations of oxygen in a hyperbaric chamber, careful diet, supplements along with Vitamin C infusions. I should ask her if she still hates cancer now that she's free of it. Of course, no one is permanently free of cancer until they die of something else.
I called Spero Clinic for an appointment with Dr. Gering in November. I was not able to get in to see her until February 25. Once I told them of my diagnosis, they got me going on the Vitamin C right away. I am to have urine, blood and feces tests done and nothing definite is settled until those results are in. However, Dr. Gering looked in my mouth and saw some ridges, suggesting Vitamin B deficiency. Also, I have a silver filling next to a gold crown. She is concerned that a chemical reaction between the two metals would result in release of mercury which is a primary component of silver fillings. She thought I should see about getting that filling replaced with something else.
She asked if the Internet router is in our bedroom. It is. She advised that the plug be pulled while we sleep. Radiation from the router is disruptive to the restoration sleep provides to our bodies. giving an assist to cancer. For the same reason, I should not sleep with a cell phone by me (I didn't).
She thought the 8/16 intermittent fast would be good, meaning that eating is limited to an 8 hour window and 16 hours with no eating. I grimaced at that, saying I dearly love to eat at night. She suggested an herbal tea. I responded with an ironic "Whoopee" which, to her credit, greatly amused her. Generally she was personable and good natured throughout the consult. While she had some ideas which would disrupt my prior habits, I better be willing to make some changes. What do I want--to give cancer a fighting chance?
Hmm, I had heard of functional medicine but wasn't sure exactly what that meant. Thanks for explaining. Dr. Gering sounds great. Good to be approaching your health from various different perspectives! Interesting to hear some of the things she suggested!
